Located in a boutique hotel nestled int he heart of Beijing’s old city, Furongji is a modern take on a traditional dim-sum restaurant. The hotel currently houses a Middle Eastern tapas all-day restaurant and wanted to expand the food offerings to appeal more to the local Chinese market.
With this market in mind, I worked closely with the owners and architects, to imagine a space and visual identity that would appeal to their existing customer base but also those less adventurous with food. The interior and visual design is a chic and updated version of traditional tea houses seen in old Hong Kong. I drew inspiration from tea houses and dim-sum restaurants I’ve visited throughout Hong Kong and southern China and also some design elements from traditional Chinese medicinal labels to create something that was nostalgic but fresh.
